When Professor Luigi Baldacci ended his teaching career at the University of Florence during the academic year 1999-2000, at the age of seventy, a large group of his friends and colleagues decided to celebrate his career by gathering together some of his writings on the nineteenth century, which, although they are among the most demonstrative of his unique style of criticism, are spread between numerous different publishers. (…) Perhaps we need only mention briefly (to be dealt with adequately, this subject would require a lot more space) the great consideration and sincere admiration, often accompanied by demonstrations of cordiality and even warm affection, that Baldacci earned for himself over the years, not only from the hundreds of students who attended his lessons but also and especially from his colleagues (and not always the younger ones), who have always treasured his unique critical abilities and his great intuition as a reader. His judgements, and the reflections that have always accompanied them (often expressed in a letter, even when regarding writers or critics at the beginning of their careers), are widely appreciated, as they are considered a perfect blend of sharpness of interpretation and deep and proven knowledge of the fundamental aspects of literature. Almost without realising it, Luigi Baldacci’s friends and colleagues have, over time, accumulated a special debt of recognition (…).
