This book contains facsimiles of certain pages taken from volumes in the Biblioteca Capitolare di Verona. The Biblioteca Capitolare di Verona owes its name and its origins to the Capitolo dei Canonici (i.e. the body of clergymen) of the Verona Cathedral, which in former times was called the Schola Sacerdotum Sanctae Veronensis Ecclesiae, i.e. “the Corporation of Priests of the Holy Church of Verona”).
This was the most important clerical body in Verona and was the centre of ecclesiastical life and all the church’s activities, working closely with the Bishop and his partner in looking after and running the diocese.
The Library is well-known among scholars around the world for the immense importance of its manuscripts. The book is an enchanting treasure whose worth derives mainly from the following:
1. The Verona codices, beginning in the 5th century, cover every successive century;
2. The manuscripts of the Verona Capitolo, as they have been for the most part produced locally, show the development of writing and culture in Verona;
3. The Verona codices are particularly influential because of the preface to the contents (…), the purity of the lessons, the excellence of the authors and the importance of the work (…);
4. They include series and multiple collections of rare scientific value thanks to their biblical, patristic, counciliar, liturgical, juridical, literary and historical contents (…);
5. They are particularly important in terms of palaeography, as they provide an almost complete picture of old handwriting containing, as they do, all kinds of handwriting from every period and in every style;
6. There is a remarkable number of palimpsest codices of great value;
7. A large number of illuminated codices of uncommon worth;
8. In the autographs the teaching and cultural activities of Veronese authors can be clearly seen.
