This volume, of great interest to book lovers and particularly those interested in calligraphy, is the first edition of a text by Stanley Morison, which was begun many years ago but remained unpublished until now. The text, which had been close to completion, after several interruptions was first sent in 1960 to James Wells of the Newberry Library in Chicago for initial editing and revisions.
Morison then made further radical interventions and additions, dedicated the work to Carla Marzoli, and entrusted his text to Nicolas Barker of the British Library for the final drafting. Now, the manuscript has at last been printed, and our publishing house is proud to have obtained world rights for the work. In this volume, Morison has examined the calligraphy of the sixteenth century from Arrighi to Ugo da Carpi, form Tagliente to Celebrino da Udine, with examples of their styles and close observations of their work. It is a text of fundamental significance, which covers the most important period in the history of calligraphy.
