A substantial portion of this work was written by Giovanni Mardersteig before his death in 1977. Hans Schmoller, a dedicated friend, together with Mrs Irmi Mardersteig and Martino Mardersteig brought it to completion. Listed are 198 titles with detailed information which supersedes all previous catalogues, much of it appearing for the first time. There are 116 reproductions of specimen pages including 12 pages of types used at the Press as well as those designed by Dr Mardersteig. Shown are 13 versions of the pressmarks in their original colors and reproductions of some of the bindings.
In addition to his commentaries, this work has the scholar-printer’s recollections of Charles Malin, his favourite punch-cutter, and his reminiscences of printing the great set of D’Annunzio’s Opera Omnia in 49 volumes. There are indexes of authors, titles, editors, translators, names mentioned in the commentary, and types used in the books.
Schmoller’s engaging preface creates a lively picture of Mardersteig’s fascinating life, and his friendships with scores of literary, artistic and graphic arts figures. He takes us behind the scenes, giving a fine overall account of the 50 year span of the Officina Bodoni, surely the most enduring important private press of our time.
4to. Lx + 288 pp. tan buckram, title stamped in gold on red background. Designed by Martino Mardersteig and printed in Verona, Italy at the Stamperia Valdonega, on paper specially made by Cartiera di Sarego, Vicenza.
